RAC: UK set for showers, hail and snow

Friday, 27 January 2012

The UK is due to be hit by wintry showers and hail, possibly with snow in some areas, as cooler weather is predicted.

RAC: UK set for showers, hail and snow

The unusually mild weather of the last few weeks is to be replaced by -5C overnight temperatures, and the Met Office issued a severe weather warning for ice to drivers on untreated roads in Scotland, Wales, northern England and Northern Ireland.

Bad weather on the way acts as a reminder to drivers to ensure they have taken out breakdown cover as a safety net.

Showers will fall as snow above roughly 250 metres with slush on lower levels, said the Met Office in its yellow 'be aware' graded warning. The warning also said untreated surfaces will be likely to have icy stretches, especially where there have been showers.

Snow will be falling as a result of a warm Atlantic weather system from the west clashing with cold air in the east.
